CLOSURE & CONDITIONS UPDATE - JULY 12, 2018

Baxter's Pinnacle, the Inspiration Point area, Hidden Falls, and trails in the Jenny Lake area remain closed as well.  See links in Current News & Notes.

Conditions remain snowy in the high country above 9,000 feet and an ice axe, and possibly crampons, are needed for negotiating steep terrain at these elevations.  The Lower Saddle, Owen-Spalding route, and Paintbrush Divide, among many other locations, all require an ice axe and crampons for safe passage at this time.

SIGNIFICANT SNOW REMAINS IN THE HIGH COUNTRY - JUNE 11, 2018

Warmer spring temperatures have melted out many of the trails at lower elevations, however, popular mountain passes such as Paintbrush Divide remain under snow and require proper equipment such as ice axe, sturdy footwear, and possibly even crampons for safe passage.  Large portions of the Teton Crest Trail remain under snow making travel and navigation difficult.  Popular climbing routes on the Grand Teton such as Owen Spalding and Upper Exum remain in alpine condition, requiring an ice axe and proper footwear just to reach the Lower Saddle.  Continue to check the blog for updated conditions on trails, passes, and climbs throughout the season.

BAXTER'S PINNACLE CLOSED - MAY 26, 2018

Effective immediately, the Baxter’s Pinnacle climbing route, as well as the social trail that branches from the horse trail and serves as the approach route to the climb is closed for the protection of nesting falcons and their young.  The climb "No Perches" is outside the closure area and remains open.  Please see attached map.

As reminder Inspiration Point and select trails in the Jenny Lake Area are closed for the season due to trail construction work.  Please obey all posted closures in the area to help trail crew get their work done safely!
Permits are required for all overnight trips into backcountry and can be obtained at the visitor centers in Moose or Colter Bay.  The Jenny Lake Ranger Station will open on June 2nd at 8:00 a.m.

SPRING UPDATE - MAY 4, 2018

Backcountry trails and routes remain mostly snow-covered and in winter-like condition at all but the lowest elevations.  The high country is still covered in deep snow and a wet slab cycle of avalanches left a considerable amount of evidence behind last week.  Additional precipitation and/or warming temperatures continue to have the potential to create dangerous avalanche conditions during the upcoming months of May and June.  Backcountry users should remain extremely cautious with route selection and timing in the high country while negotiating this transitional snow pack.  The Bridger Teton Avalanche Center is no longer issuing avalanche forecasts for this winter season, however, their website still provides access to relevant weather station data.
