MID-WINTER UPDATE - FEBRUARY 1, 2023

Right to left: Veiled, Wister, Buck Mtn - 1.21.23
This winter continues to be a welcome change from the past couple.  Despite a bit of a dry spell in mid January we continue to remain slightly above normal for Snow Water Equivalent in the Snake River Basin thanks to a healthy dose of snow at the end of the month. Let's keep our fingers crossed that tomorrow's appearance of an oversized rodent in Pennsylvania won't have any impact on the trend!
We had one significant rescue in January of an injured snowboarder who triggered an avalanche on the west face of Albright Peak and another close call yesterday in the Sliver Couloir on Nez Perce. Please stay informed and make sure to get the latest avalanche forecast and snowpack information before you head out into the hills to enjoy the snow!

Please help us protect our bighorn sheep population by abiding by winter wildlife closures and voluntarily avoiding critical habitat zones.  Click here for the latest closure map.

Winter backcountry camping permits are required and available by phone by calling 307-739-3309 on weekdays and 307-739-3301 on weekends.
