HAPPY HALLOWEEN - OCTOBER 31, 2017

The Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center (Moose) is now closed for the season.  All visitor centers and campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park are closed for the winter.  Camping permits are required year-round for all overnight trips into the backcountry.  Backcountry camping permits can be obtained Monday-Friday during business hours (8:30-12:00 pm & 1:00-4:30 pm) at the front desk in the Park Headquarters Building.  To obtain a permit on weekends please contact Park Dispatch at (307) 739-3301.

Conditions have changed very little since the last update but that will likely change very soon as future precipitation events leave snow behind that does not melt.  Fall updates will continue on a limited basis only when conditions change significantly.  Updates will be more frequent during the winter season.    

FALL UPDATE - OCTOBER 13, 2017

The snow and winter-like conditions in the high country have remained in place ever since the first storms in mid September hit.  Hikers and climbers traveling above 9,000 feet should be prepared for deep, drifted snow in places, making travel difficult.  Dangerous avalanche conditions are also a possibility in steep terrain at these elevations.  

Camping permits are required year-round for all overnight trips into the backcountry.  Permits can be obtained at the visitor center in Moose until it closes for the winter at 5pm on October 31st.  Beginning November 1st, backcountry camping permits can be obtained Monday-Friday during business hours (8:30-12:00 pm & 1:00-4:30 pm) at the front desk in the Park Headquarters Building.  To obtain a permit on weekends please contact Park Dispatch at (307) 739-3301.
