EARLY WINTER CONDITIONS - NOVEMBER 28, 2013

It's that time of year when we are 'between seasons' and the thin snow and ice conditions prevail.  Skiers have been out to find good turns in isolated areas above 9,000' and on some north facing meadows. Crossing over rocks and logs at lower elevations has been the crux of the day.   It looks like a week of sunny and warm weather at higher elevations is coming to an end as a change in the weather is coming soon.   Before heading out into the mountains be sure to check the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center,  jhavalanche.org for the latest avalanche forecast.

POST GOV'T SHUTDOWN - OCTOBER 20, 2013

These cold mornings and warm afternoons are good opportunities to enjoy the fall climbing season.  At lower elevations some of the south facing rock faces are snow free.  At the higher elevations we are still finding about 6-12" of snow and ice covered rock with some 2-3 foot wind drifts.  Get out and enjoy the park while this weather lasts.

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 30, 2013   Winter Weather Continues!  

Snow continues to fall on and off above 10,500'.  We are finding about 6" of snow at that elevation and more at higher elevations in 2-3 foot wind drifts.  Another cold storm is forecast for mid-week which could double that amount.

9/29/2013 - Snow amounts at 10,500'

A winter storm has taken shape and hit the Tetons with snow.  The amount of snow varies from 1-6" with more snow in the forecast for Thursday (26th) and Friday (27th).  The high peaks are now snow covered and icy, expect snow, ice and verglas in most areas.  These conditions will prevail until warmer days return then some south aspects at lower elevations could dry enough for some fall climbing. 

JENNY LAKE RANGER STATION CLOSED - SEPTEMBER 9, 2013

The Jenny Lake Ranger Station is closed for the season.  Backcountry camping permits can be obtained at the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center in Moose. Call 307-739-3309 for more information.  

As we move into fall, climbers and hikers should be prepared to deal with the changing conditions, including: 

• snow, ice and verglas in shaded areas, especially on north and west aspects above 11,000 feet
• freezing overnight temperatures.
• shorter days - usable light only lasts until about 7:30 - 8:00 pm 

Also specific route condition updates will be limited as we move into fall and staffing is reduced to winter levels.  The HOMEPAGE will continue to provide updates on general conditions in the Teton Range throughout the year.
